Autumn, forests and what lies beneath….

Autumn, forests and what lies beneath….

Autumn, this time of the year when leaves cover everything. These amazing landscape imbued with these magic colours. Making photos, searching for mushrooms or just relaxing in a quiet spot will help you to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday.

In some humid places you will come across some important individuals: mushrooms. But do not get mislead for these are only the tip of the iceberg. What you can see opening its way up to the surface across the leaves is only the reproductive structure of the fungus since it really lives beneath your feet, down in the ground.

Most fungi spread a network of filaments called hyphae forming a webby tangle called mycelium. This micylium is the body of the fungus. As the fungus grows, the mycelium and the roots of trees interweave. This arrangement is beneficial to both partners. This aliance is known as mycorrhizal fungi (myco=Greek for fungus + rhizal=Greek for root).

Many common forest mushrooms are mycorrhizal fungi.
